| Today's
comic confirms what some of you have known since Monday: the mysterious
new character is actually a mysterious old character. Weird Beard has
turned up several times in West of Bathurst.
He first appeared in the summer of 2008 as a goofy summer resident
whose bonkers behaviour annoyed the Davies Junior Fellows. He returned
every summer thereafter. It's difficult to link to all Weird Beard's appearances, as they are many and varied. Let's just say that during his time in WoB, he ranged from zany through baffling to rather cool. His greatest distinguishing feature was probably his love of Doctor Who and other science fiction, and the nicest thing he ever did was give Marie Dumont a little Eleventh Doctor action figure that later offered her a certain amount of comfort. I'll link to that particular comic, as it probably serves as the best possible encapsulation of Weird Beard's personality. (And yes, my drawing style has evolved a bit since then.) |

Panel 1: The mysterious man shakes Rose's hand. Man: Call me Weird Beard. Rose: Really? Panel 2: Weird Beard: It's a nickname. It's grown on me. Rose: Do you hang out in this spot, waiting for people to come screaming for Maggie? Panel 3: Weird Beard hands Rose what looks like a small blue notebook.
