It Never Rains

Greetings, all. I just wanted to say a word about the current plotline.

I know everything is absolutely miserable right now, and it may be getting to be just a bit much. This is, in fact, It Never Rains' heart of darkness. It's always been heading here, ever since I made the possibly quite foolish decision to have Maggie seething with vicious hatred for Iz. Fun fact: in my original conception of the story, there was no Universe B. This was going to be the only timeline. I changed my mind on that because of how relentlessly bleak the story would have had to be to accommodate it.

I can promise that the bleakness is not going to last forever. We're heading back towards a focus on Universe B, in which Rose and Iz will have a very different dynamic. There will be lots of white hair and the repercussions of a lengthy coma to deal with, but there will also be hugging. I can promise that. I can also promise, in no particular order, weird science, Jack declaring he hates everybody while grudgingly doing something selfless, Denise's research, probably some time-travelling mice, the man whose name is not Casey wandering chaotically through everything, Rose imagining herself as a noir detective, Basil being calm about weird stuff, and elves.

Hang in there. There's still some misery to come, but it's always darkest before Jennifer invents something improbable.

Panel 1: In Universe A, back in March of 2023, Iz A and Rose have both been dosed with a paralytic, which is beginning to wear off. Iz struggles to sit upright. Rose lies slumped on the couch, staring at nothing.

Panel 2: Maggie appears and drags Rose upright. Rose's expression doesn't change. Iz A is trembling and crying.

Maggie: Okay. Up you get. You'll be able to jump now. Hang onto me.

Iz A: Rose--

Panel 3: Maggie gets Rose onto her feet. Rose is still not reacting.

Maggie: You don't get to talk to her, you bastard. All right, Rose. On three. Aim for 2021. One...two...

Panel 4: Maggie and Rose are gone. Iz continues to cry.

Iz A: Rose...
